New Bop Brigade: Iron Man

Bassist Steve Messick originally arranged "Iron Man" for a friend's wedding reception, during which a hard rock "Yeeeeeeah!" was heard from a heavy-metal-savvy wedding guest as soon as he recognized the melody. When Messick and pianist David Franklin founded the New Bop Brigade in 2002, this arrangement of "Iron Man" became the jazz quintet's closing number for their shows in Seattle. This recording of "Iron Man" was made during the recording sessions for the New Bop Brigade's eponymous 2005 album, New Bop Brigade. The track was done in one take, and it captures the energy and spirit of what the New Bop Brigade sounded like live. The album artwork combines elements from science fiction with hardware from a vintage Conn 10M tenor saxophone.
